Students at Carmel schools are about to get more involved in their local community. The mayor of Carmel, Indiana, James Brainard, recently announced the formation of a new community group at Carmel High School: the Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council. The youth council serves to cultivate new leaders for the Central Indiana area, culled from a large pool of teenage applicants. All Carmel children from eighth grade on are invited to apply for a spot on the Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council, but only thirty applicants will be selected to serve with the organization. If you’re interested in serving the community of Carmel and are a student at Carmel High School, University High School, or Options Charter High School (or an eighth grader at Carmel Middle School), you should attend the kick-off event that’s taking place in the Carmel High School Community Room on Monday, March 21, 2011.
Below is a press release announcing the Carmel event and further information about the Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council:
“Mayor Jim Brainard will announce the launch of a new student organization, the Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council, created to identify and address issues youths face today and to encourage greater teen involvement in the community. The concept of the CMYC originated from Carmel High School junior Jeff Hou, who brought the idea to Mayor Brainard earlier this year.
Seeking to recruit about thirty of Carmel’s most capable teen leaders, the new CMYC will be operated by these youth leaders from across the City of Carmel and will provide these leaders with the opportunity to take active roles in identifying and addressing issues. When selected, the members will serve as the official voice of Carmel youth within the Carmel City government and work directly with the Mayor of Carmel and top City leaders on projects and participate in discussions that directly relate to youth issues. Applications will be available at the kick-off event.”
The kick-off event for the Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council will take place on Monday, March 21, 2011 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Carmel High School Community Room, in Door #7. Mayor Brainard will be on hand to give a presentation, and Carmel High School junior Jeff Hou, the originator of the project, will also be presenting at the Carmel event. Carmel students in grades 8 through 11 are invited to attend the Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council kick off event and apply to join the council. So if you care about the Carmel community, get out to Carmel High School on Monday, March 21, 2011 for the call out and kick off of the Carmel Mayor’s Youth Council.
