Free Recycling Event Greens Up Carmel

As the ground thaws, the grass grows, and the trees begin to bud, Central Indiana‘s thoughts turn to Mother Nature. The sight of nature bursting into bloom before our very eyes often incites feelings of awe, joy, and sinus congestion, and it really puts things into perspective: the world operates on a precarious balance, and one push in either direction could be enough to ensure our Earth never blooms again. It’s in the spirit of conservation that Earth Week was introduced to the United States as a national holiday in the 1970’s; the tradition continues today, with plenty of ecologically minded Indianapolis events taking place throughout the Circle City and Central Indiana.

The affluent Indianapolis suburb of Carmel, Indiana is also getting in on the Earth Week fun with a few green friendly initiatives of its own. Three separate Carmel organizations, Carmel Utilities, the Carmel High School International Baccalaureate Students, and Disposal Alternatives Organization (DAO), are getting together to clean up Carmel and give a little something back to Mother Nature at the same time. The Free Recycling Event will take place on Saturday, April 16, 2011, and other ecological services will be offered throughout Earth Week to Carmel people.

The following is a press release regarding the Free Recycling Event to be held in Carmel, Indiana during Earth Week:

“In celebration of Earth Week, Carmel Utilities, in conjunction with the Carmel High School International Baccalaureate Students, is partnering with Disposal Alternatives Organization (DAO) to host a Free Recycle Event on April 16, 2011 and recycling pick up services from April 16th through April 23rd.

From April 16th to April 23rd, DAO crews will pick up items that are difficult to drop off, such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, stoves, ovens, lawn mowers, mattresses, box springs, water heaters, air conditioners, large office equipment, furnaces, large plastic playground equipment (broken down) and other large items. Pick up is free, except a $5 pick up fee for TV’s, computer monitors and mattresses will be charged. You must schedule an appointment in advance for pick up services. Call DAO at (317) 375-7788 to schedule an appointment.

On Saturday, April 16th at the Carmel High School Stadium parking lot (NW corner of Keystone Parkway & 136th St.) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., DAO will accept all of the above plus electronics, microwaves, small appliances, TV’s of all types ($5 fee for TVs, computer monitors, and mattresses), cell phones, computer equipment, dehumidifiers, small lawn tools, fans, medical/orthopedic equipment, cardboard, plastics, batteries, cardboard, oil, metals, wiring & cables, Styrofoam and  bicycles. Items that are not accepted at the event include toxic chemicals, paint, furniture, wood, and clothing.

NEW service added: DAO has teamed up with Hoosier Shred, a local shredding company, to offer free on site document destruction. Hoosier Shred will have a shredder truck available during the Free Recycle Event on April 16th to destroy your personal and confidential business documents.

For additional information please call (317) 375-7788 or email info@daorecycling.org.”

So if you’ve got a heap of stuff you don’t know what to do with, including grandma’s thirty year old stereo system and that oven that makes the whole house smell like gas, consider doing something good for the Earth and recycling it. The city of Carmel makes it easy on you during Earth Week this year; if you’ve got big stuff that needs to go, DAO will come by and pick it up for you. It doesn’t get any easier than that. Or if you’re a bit more motivated, go the Carmel High School Stadium parking lot on April 16, 2011 to drop off your unwanted stuff. Either way, Carmel Utilities, the Carmel High School International Baccalaureate Students, Hoosier Shred, Disposal Alternatives Organization, and the other Carmel businesses and people involved in the Free Recycling Event should go a long way toward making Central Indiana a greener place.
