Carmel, Indiana is the home of the newest national marathon event. The first annual Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend takes over the streets of Carmel Saturday, June 11, 2011. This new Carmel event is expected to draw nearly 7,500 participants for four races. With a marathon, a half marathon, an 8K Run with a Championship purse and a one mile Family Fitness Walk, the Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend promises to be an exciting event. Proceeds benefit eleven Indianapolis charities or not for profit organizations that promote fitness in their communities.
The Carmel Marathon is a nationally promoted race event offering a national championship level purse in the hopes of attracting participants from across the United States. The race route begins and ends at the new Palladium at the Center for Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana and take runners on a picturesque tour of Hamilton County including the Carmel Arts and Design District, Old Town Carmel and Carmel – Clay Parks.
The event is organized by Carmel Road Racing Group LLC, a newly formed management company with headquarters in Carmel. The founders of the group enjoy 20 years of combined experience in Indianapolis sports and national sports. Organizers hope that the Carmel Marathon will draw the best runners in the United States to compete for a worthy prize. The top ten winners of the 8K race will be awarded a total of $20,000. This year it is projected that between 35 and 40 percent of participants are attending from outside of Indiana, and 60 to 70 percent will attend from outside of Hamilton County.
“We’re going to have some national outreach to participants and really promote this,” said the president of Carmel Road Racing Group, Todd Oliver. The Carmel Marathon hopes to be named the 2011 USA Track and Field Men’s 8K Championship Race, a national event in sports. “We’re one of the final two cities being considered,” said Oliver. Whether or not the Carmel Marathon gains this honor, organizers say the $20,000 purse will stay in place to attract elite runners.
This race adds to the canon of street races happening throughout the year in Indianapolis including the One America 500 Festival Mini Marathon, the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half Marathon and the Geist Marathon. Though the June weather may deter some runners, organizers recognize that elite runners train throughout the year and the marathon volunteers and organizers will be prepared for any kind of weather.
With an event of this size comes a little disruption to the city. Carmel people will find road closures throughout the day to accommodate the race. Please visit this website to see how the road closures will affect you.
