Sports and Recreation in Carmel, Indiana

Carmel, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis, may be touted as a great place to live, but it’s also a great place to play. Whether you’re looking to indulge in Carmel sports full time or just for an afternoon of recreational fun, Carmel has something for everyone. Popular in the winter, but open year round, the Carmel Ice Skadium has regulation hockey rinks, and golf enthusiasts can enjoy the back 9 at Brookshire Golf Club.

Carmel is also home to Laser Flash, Indiana‘s largest laser tag center, and the Carmel Dad’s Club provides every imaginable sporting opportunity for Carmel children. In addition to these establishments, the Carmel parks system’s Monon Center has an abundance of recreational programs ranging from fitness to aquatics and more. The parks and recreation department even offers a number of youth and adult intramural sports leagues in a variety of different sports, including soccer, baseball, and basketball.

Despite all these cool Carmel attractions that are open to the public, the main outlet for Carmel sports comes from the Carmel education system: Carmel High School. Carmel High School routinely scores among the top ten athletic teams in the United States, a huge distinction that gives sports at Carmel High School a leg up over other Indiana schools. Carmel High School is a part of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), and its teams often make it to the state tournament. In 2009, the CHS football team made it to the state championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium, where they lost in a nail biter to Warren Central High School, an Indianapolis school. Other sports offered at Carmel High School include soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, cross country, and more.

Carmel, Indiana is definitely a sports town. Located so close to a huge sporting community like Indianapolis, how can it not be? Several Carmel businesses like Brookshire Golf Club, Laser Flash, and the Carmel Ice Skadium were built specifically with sports in mind, while the city itself has some sports offerings via the Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation Department and the Carmel Dads’ Club. Carmel is even home to one of the top athletics high schools in the nation, Carmel High School. Carmel sports are an essential part of this growing, prosperous Indianapolis suburb.
