Deborah DeFazio Lyons: Classical Portraiture in Carmel, Indiana

Deborah DeFazio Lyons is a custom portrait artist who lives in Carmel, Indiana, a suburb on the northern outskirts of Indianapolis. Her clients come from all over the United States, as well as the other nearby suburbs and Indy satellite cities, such as Fishers,Westfield, Noblesville and Zionsville.

Deborah DeFazio Lyons, a strong member of the Carmel arts scene, has been a self-taught classical portrait artist for over 20 years. Her work is exacting, with an almost photographic quality, though the viewer is definitely aware the work is a painting. Her subjects are mostly people, but she also paints animals, seascapes, landscapes, boats and classic cars. She works with both oil and pastel, creating portraits from either a photograph or a live model.

Six children’s books contain illustrations by Deborah DeFazio Lyons, and her work includes quite a few portraits of luminaries, including a space shuttle astronaut, entertainment and sports personalities, and a U.S. Senator.

Deborah DeFazio Lyons was one of the original founding members of the Portrait Society of America and belongs to the Indianapolis Art Center and the Hoosier Salon. She is also a signature member of the Pastel Society of America.

She labels her work as classic heirloom portraits, and indeed they are. Striving for insight into the person, rather than a superficial representation of what’s on the outside only, Deborah DeFazio Lyons has attained recognition in many forums, not least of which are her subjects. A custom portrait in oil on canvas starts at $3,000, and one in pastels on fine-quality archival paper starts at $300.
