Detour Restaurant – An American Grille

Detour is a family-friendly restaurant in Carmel, a lovely North Indianapolis suburb in Central Indiana. Only a few steps from the Monon Trail in Carmel, Detour landed smack in the middle of Carmel’s renowned Arts & Design District in the newly-renovated downtown Carmel neighborhood.

Detour proudly advertises itself as “An American Grille” offering scrumptious dishes made from scratch, tons of flat-screen TVs for catching the latest in Greater Indianapolis sports, a huge outdoor patio and live music by Indianapolis favorites such as Sam King, Mother Grove and Stepp-Walker Project. Other happenings at Detour include the “Team Trivia Night” on Wednesdays, an event that allows you to bring in some friends and play Trivia from your table against other players in the restaurant. Fun!

Detour Grille also has another slogan: “Home of the Triple Bypass.” This sounds ominous, but in fact it refers to an irresistible, 30-inch long Italian Beef sandwich that tops the scales at two full pounds. It’s loaded with peppers and onions, served with Au Jus, and appropriately dubbed “the Triple Bypass.” Any customer who finishes this monstrous delectable in less than 45 minutes gets their name on the menu, as well as the restaurant’s “Bypass Wall of Fame.”

Other tempting items on the made-from-scratch menu are Fried Dill Chips, the Overstuffed Quesadilla (forks required), a Creamy Spicy Crab dish, Tempura Rock Shrimp, the house signature Spicy Stoplight Salad, Beer Cheese with Jalapeno Soup, Make ’em Messy sides such as the White Cheddar Mashed Potato and Three-Cheese Mac & Cheese, burgers, sandwiches and wraps galore, and favorite American grill entrees such as Baby Back Ribs, Filet of Ribeye, Teriyaki-Garlic Salmon and classic Fish and Chips.

You’ll enjoy reading the Detour Restaurant’s menu almost as much as devouring your food there. The items are described to a tee and often humorous, such as the “Yo’ Adrian,” an Italian beef flatbread sandwich full of sauteed peppers, onions, mushrooms and grated mozzarella.

Save room for Detour Restaurant’s signature desserts such as Gavin’s Chocolate Chip Cookie and Ice Cream, a Red Velvet Cupcake or a decadent Peanut Butter Cup Sunday.

The house offers lots of designer specialty drinks too, such as their Snickerdoodle or Banana Split Martinis,  Caribbean Lemonade and “the Traffic Jam,” a concoction made of cranberry and orange juices spiked with Bacardi Dragon Berry. The modern bar is fully stocked at Detours, with cocktails, wine, sake and beer lists that simply won’t quit.

Mention should be made of the upscale decor inside this popular restaurant in Greater Indianapolis. It features black and steel-grey, with lots of exposed brick and rich wood, presenting a casual, sleek atmosphere that matches the menu perfectly.

Take a “detour” from your busy day, slide in and sample the fun. You might just decide to stay a while.
